The Origins of CEATEC

The origins of CEATEC trace back to the Japan Electronics Industry Exhibition, first held in 1962. The show comprised four sections — "Televisions, Radios and Other Audio Equipment," "Radio Equipment including Electronic Applied Equipment," "Measuring Instruments," and "Electronic Components" — and drew 207 exhibitors and roughly 150,000 visitors over its 10-day run. Its defining trait as a "comprehensive exhibition" spanning everything from components to finished products has carried through to the present day.

From its 3rd edition in 1964, the show was renamed the Electronics Show. Its 25th edition, the 1986 Electronics Show, drew a still-unmatched record of 443,500 visitors.

In 2000, the Electronics Show merged with COM JAPAN, an information and communications exhibition, to form CEATEC JAPAN. Under the banner "Enriching Society through Technology," a new chapter began as a "composite" exhibition covering video, information, communications, and digital networks in full.

By 2007, visitors topped 200,000, cementing the show's position as a "leading comprehensive exhibition for IT and electronics."

From 2016, the show shifted direction as the "CPS/IoT Exhibition," bringing together everything from the electronic components and devices underpinning IoT to finished products, deployed equipment, and the services built on them — all working toward the realization of "Society 5.0." It has since become one of Japan's premier exhibitions, drawing major attention as a gathering place for key figures from Japan and abroad.
