Digital Broadcasting Forum: Panel Discussion
Implications for handheld & mobile broadcasting
Broadcast services will form one of the major features of digital broadcasting. Commercial broadcast services to mobile devices such as cellular phones are scheduled to start in the spring of 2006, and receiver manufacturers are in the final stages of product development. In the panel discussion, representatives of broadcasters who provide services for cellular phones and other mobile devices, content suppliers, and receiver manufacturers will present their views on the expectations and challenges they are facing in the operational and technical aspects of broadcasting services from their own particular standpoints.
Conductor Mr. Takao Shimizu Senior Vice-President, Office of Chief Technical Officer Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc.
- The potential of Mobile DTV's future
One-segment DTV for mobile phones are gathering attention. This is considered to become the first medium to realize a full-fledged "ntegration of broadcasting and telecommunications." It is also expected that data content received with television images will trigger new businesses that closely link these two fields. By actively utilizing data broadcasts, TBS strives to realize a unique "roadcast portal"using the TBS brand. We will introduce some of our efforts.
Mr. Tetsuo Yukawa Strategic Planning of Mobile DTV. Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc.
- Development of Cellular Telephone Terminals for Terrestrial Digital Broadcast Reception
As the introduction of terrestrial digital broadcasting approaches, NHK and KDDI have been developing mobile terminals to receive these broadcasts since mid-2002. From prototypes to working models, KDDI is exploring "synergistic functions" as a communications carrier. Cellular telephones are packed with functions, of which TV reception is simply the newest. KDDI will talk about the "synergy of communications and broadcasting" in terms of technology development
Mr. Hiroyuki Nakamura General Manager, Media Technology Department, IT Development Division KDDI CORPORATION
- The Increasing Convergence of Televisions and Mobile Telephones
The fusion of broadcasting and communications, as seen in 1-segment broadcasting, and the sudden rise of moving-image contents foretell a third business wave for the cellular telephone industry (following on the cellular telephone itself and the browser-phone). Contents provider Index, which developed its cellular telephone business with television broadcasters [a television broadcaster??], will discuss the status, synergies and potential of both services.
Mr. Yozo Omori Executive Officer (Media Business Div) Index Corporation
- Commercialization Activities for 1-segment Broadcast Reception Equipment
Standardized primarily for reception on mobile equipment, 1-segment broadcasting has the potential to realize reception equipment providing new levels of functionality and applications. In addition to introducing activities targeting the development and commercialization of 1-segment broadcast reception equipment, this session will also touch upon future prospects and issues.
Mr. Masamichi Ono eputy General Manager, Media Technology Development Dept. Development Div. IT & Communications Network Company Sony Corporation
- Status and Prospects for Mobile Transmission Experimentation and Car-Installed Receiver Development
This session will focus on the status and future prospects for mobile reception stabilization technologies, including two-tuner diversity reception required for Hi-Vision broadcasts at high speeds (13-segment broadcasts), as well as digital broadcasting antennae for automobiles, 13-segment broadcast reception equipment installed in vehicles, and dedicated 1-segment reception equipment.
