In the Mobility Area of Hall 1, Nissan demonstrated a self-driving car. Based on the Leaf electric vehicle (EV) sold by Nissan, the NSC-2015 has been specially modified for unmanned operation.
The demonstration scenario involved a person making a trip to the shopping mall, parking, visiting the stores, and then driving back home. Visitors who had come to see the demonstration heard an announcement: "The mall is crowded today and it will take 10 minutes to find a parking space."
So the driver gets out of the vehicle, and then the NSC-2015 moves off to the parking area all by itself. On the way it automatically pauses at the stop line in front of a pedestrian crossing, checks whether it is safe to proceed, and then continues. Arriving at the empty parking space, it reverses in and stops. While it is parked somebody suspicious approaches so the vehicle transmits pictures to the owner's smartphone using a cloud service. The owner selects "Alert" on the phone's screen and the car responds with an audible warning.
Having finished shopping, the owner summons the car using the smartphone. Referring to the owner's location data, the NSC-2015 sets off from the car park and fetches its human driver. From start to finish, the car's performance was very polished.
Note that during the demo a staff member was seated in the rear of the NSC-2015 as a safety precaution.
