NTT Docomo Introduces Smartphones Developed by Samsung

On October 5th, 2010, NTT Docomo held joint press conferences with Samsung Electronics in the Grand Ballroom on the third floor of the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi, Tokyo, and at the CEATEC Japan venue in Makuhari Messe. Samsung Electronics announced their new Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab models for the Japanese market that will be released as the Docomo Smartphone Galaxy S and Docomo Smartphone Galaxy Tab. Both models will offer graphic user interface operation on full-touch panel screens to enable web and e-book browsing as well as Flash content viewing.

Lightweight and slim tablet-style smartphones at the touch-and-try corner in the venue

The Galaxy S smartphone features a 4-inch organic EL display, a five mega-pixel camera, and supports full high-vision playback. This smartphone model is scheduled to be released at the end of October 2010, with pre-orders available from Oct. 15th, Friday. The Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch tablet-type smartphone with a PC-like 1024 x 600-pixel display. This remarkable device is only 12.1mm thick and weighs a mere 382g, and it is scheduled for release at the end of November 2010. On the day of the announcement, the company set up a large display panel in front of its main booth to display the live broadcast from the press conference at the Grand Hyatt, which featured addresses from Docomo President Takashi Yamada and Shin Jong-kyun, Samsung's Mobile Business Division President, who both enthusiastically promoted these new products. After the initial announcement, a black curtain was lifted from the booth and the opening ceremony was held at the touch-and-try corner that quickly filled up with a large crowd of exhibition visitors eager to put the products through their paces.

Expanded smartphone services, Dai Nippon Printing tie-up, and e-book services

As new services for these products, Docomo will open its "Docomo Market" with "sp mode" that will enable users to use an existing i-mode address as is, and provide Flash content. Docomo will also run a trial e-book service from the end of October through to the end of December 2010. And via a joint venture with Dai Nippon Printing, Docomo is aiming to establish a hybrid bookstore that can be linked to actual bookstores.
