The Fraunhofer IIS Audio and Multimedia division, based in Erlangen, Germany, has been working in compressed audio technology for more than 20 years and remains a leading innovator of technologies for cutting-edge multimedia systems. Fraunhofer IIS is universally credited with the development of mp3 and co-development of AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) as well as technologies for the media world of tomorrow, including MPEG Surround, SX Pro and the Fraunhofer Audio Communication Engine.
MPEG Surround - high-quality surround sound for the upcoming ISDB-Tmm/Tsb system
The forthcoming ISDB-Tmm/Tsb Multimedia Broadcast System for Mobile-TV and Digital Radio services in Japan includes HE-AACv2 + MPEG Surround for audio broadcast and download . The ISO standard MPEG Surround delivers high-quality surround sound in a cost-efficient way for broadcasters and mobile operators since it only requires stereo bit-rates.
Additionally, the surround programs can be enjoyed via stereo receivers. MPEG Surround can be used in the car and on mobile terminals since the codec's virtual surround mode allows for 5.1 sound on conventional stereo headphones. To enable a seamless transition from stereo to surround broadcasting, Fraunhofer's flexible stereo-to-multi-channel upmix solution SX Pro can be used.
