EXHIBITION TRENDS

The theme for CEATEC JAPAN 2005, the sixth staging of this annual exhibition, was "The Advancing Ubiquitous Society-Revealing What's Next, Changing Tomorrow." A total of 788 companies and organizations, including 293 from 28 countries and regions worldwide, exhibited in this year's show, up 60 from the previous year. A record 199,680 registered visitors attended the exhibition. First day visitor numbers reached 33,619, a substantial increase over CEATEC JAPAN 2004, and more than 50,000 visitors visited the exhibition on the forth day, October 7. Of particular note was the 37% increase in overseas visitors, to 3,628, creating a new record. These healthy numbers attest to the increasing awareness among people in Japan and overseas of CEATEC JAPAN as a venue for launching new products and technologies, and for showcasing to the world the strengths of Japanese "monozukuri" (product creation).

Another indicator supporting the rise in the exhibition's popularity was the increasing number of media representatives in attendance. This year, more than 2,000 media representatives came to CEATEC JAPAN, a 10% increase over 2004. Naturally, the event was covered in industry newspapers and journals, but a distinctive feature of CEATEC JAPAN 2005 was substantial coverage by the general print media and television. Overseas television networks were no exception, with ten covering this year's event, including international networks BBC World and CNN, as well as the U.S. network, NBC. It should be mentioned that their coverage was not limited to news reports, but included many documentaries featuring the exhibition. As if responding to this wide media coverage, there was an endless succession of launches and exhibits that were world, Japan, and industry "firsts."

In general terms, 2005 has seen the further proliferation and advancement of technologies. By 2005, the "shoots" of new technologies and standards announced in CEATEC JAPAN 2004 had grown and blossomed into numerous products, which were displayed in booths throughout the exhibition venue. Existing products underwent further advances, stunning visitors in terms of their number, variation, and quality.

Until 2004, the ubiquitous society, sustained by a diversity of technologies, including innovations in telecommunications technology and batteries, seemed close at hand. For visitors to CEATEC JAPAN 2005, however, it was clear that the ubiquitous society has arrived and is continuing to grow and permeate our lives.
